Parent Support & Resources

As a parent, your continued involvement is critical to the healthy development of your child who is deaf or hard of hearing. In fact, we can’t fulfill our mission without your ongoing support. And this is why we strongly encourage all CCHAT parents to:

  • Observe their child’s class and speech therapy sessions
  • Talk with teachers and staff
  • Participate in our Parent-Program-Partnership Organization
  • Meet with our Executive Director

These informal visits allow you to better understand your child’s developmental needs – and how CCHAT works to fulfill those needs.

But we also provide more formal opportunities for parents who wish to remain actively involved.

Educational Workshops

All CCHAT parents are invited to educational workshops hosted throughout the school year. Staff and guest speakers present at these meetings – accompanied by parents who help lead longer Q&A panel discussions.

Previous topics have covered everything from behavior management and grief reconciliation to assistive hearing technology and language development.

In addition, for evening courses we provide on-site childcare services and dinner at the Center so that you don’t have to hire a babysitter to attend these instructional workshops.

Parent FAQs

Below are some of the questions we receive most often from CCHAT parents. If you have a question that isn’t on this list, feel free to contact us directly to get the answers you need.

1. Do you only teach in English?

No. Our curriculum includes both English and Spanish instruction.

2. Is learning Sign Language required?

Learning American Sign Language (ASL) can be very beneficial – for students and parents alike. But with the technology available today children who are deaf and hard of hearing can also master spoken language with our specialized services.

3. What if my child is older than 3 years of age?

When working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing, early intervention is best. But it’s never too late to enroll your child in our program.

4. How much does CCHAT cost?

Our services – including the diagnostic hearing exam – are provided at no charge for families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

5. Does my child qualify for CCHAT?

If your child has hearing impairment and you wish to pursue a listening and spoken language option then he or she is eligible to enroll in our program.

6. What is a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that helps restore hearing functionality within the inner ear. Although hearing aids make sounds louder, cochlear implants stimulate the hearing nerve directly and the signal is then sent to the brain – where sound is ultimately processed and recognized.
